Parish Council Meeting
May 4, 2009

MINUTES

Present: Father Kevin Murphy, Pastor; Bradley Kammholz, Chairman; Mark Abbott, Keith Bullis, Lisa DePalma, Gregory Farrell, Rosemary Graham, Stephanie Honz, James and Virginia Kaufer, Sister Judith Ann Kenrick, George Kimber, Sarah McDonald, Carol McManus, Karl and Piroska Mersich, Michael Moore, David Mountan, Mark Mungenast, Peggy O’Neil Midgley, Susan Payne, Gerard Rooney, Dawn Schnell, Sally Schrecker, and Jeffrey Stid.

Excused: Gene Agban, Joseph DiPrima, Geraldine Gebbie, Edward Kay, and Deacon John Payne

Bradley Kammholz began the meeting at 7 p.m. David Mountan said an opening prayer.

Brad asked for approval of the minutes of the April 13, 2009, Parish Council Meeting. A correction was noted that the minutes approved at the April meeting were from the February 2, 2009 meeting, not 2008 as written. Michael Moore made a motion to approve the minutes as amended. David Mountan seconded the motion, and it was unanimously approved.

Pastor’s Sharings
Father Kevin Murphy expressed gratitude to Council members for their work during the year, and to Brad Kammholz for preparing a document that will serve as a communication to the parish about the Council’s focus this year on Pastoral Administrator as a leadership model.

Confirmation of 43 candidates from the parish will take place on May 11th at Scared Heart Cathedral by Bishop Clark.

Parish staff is developing new opportunities for teens in the Faith Formation program for next year.

Chairman’s Comments
Brad Kammholz expressed his appreciation for the support of Parish Council members during the Council year.

Parish Budget
Father Kevin, on behalf of the Finance Council, presented a proposed 2009-2010 Parish Operating Budget. Revenues total $1,361,564; expenses total $1,357,781, reflecting a surplus of $3,783. A Proposed Capital Expenditures Budget of $158,000 was presented with projects that include paving work between the Rectory and Ministry Center; repair to the Manse roof and porch; HVAC work in Reddington Hall; and architectural planning for the entrance to the church property from Rand Place.

Father Kevin encouraged Council members to review the budget summary that was distributed, and if anyone has questions or concerns to email him and an explanation will be given at the June meeting when the proposed budget will again be presented for acceptance by the Council.

Parish Council Nominations
Mark Mungenast reported that there are six openings on the Parish Council to be filled through the selection process in May. He thanked Council members for contacting the following individuals who agreed to serve on the Council if selected: Kara Bosco, Lou Mattina, Dan McBride, Al Wilt, Al Herdklotz, Rajiv Dewan, Suzanne Ward, John Creary, Polly Decker, Tricia Wilson, Kathy Legawiec, and Joan Eisenhart. The following Council members have agreed to serve a second term, if selected: Karl and Piroska Mersich, Mark Mungenast, Dawn and Jim Schnell and Jeff Stid.

Brad asked for a motion to accept the abovementioned candidates for Parish Council Carol McManus made a motion to accept the candidates. Sister Judith Ann Kenrick seconded the motion, and it was unanimously approved.

Saint’s Place
Colleen Knauf and Frances Barr report on assistance that Saint’s Place provided for 667 newly arrived refugees during the year. A tutoring program continues with approximately 90 school-aged children and adults attending at the Greek Orthodox Church of the Holy Spirit on South Avenue and at the Rochester Community Center. St. Boniface Church has recently joined this effort and had donated space in their school building for this program.

Saint’s Place Annual Sale was held April 22 through April 25 with volunteers from the parish, local high schools, colleges and other parishes. Monies raised from this sale totaled over $40,000.

St. John of Rochester Church in Fairport has donated five former classrooms in their school building for Saint’s Place clothing closet. Volunteers from St. John’s parish will also assist in the Saint’s Place Ministry.

Social Ministry Subcommittee Report
Jim Kaufer reported on the activities of the Social Ministry Committee. The committee sponsors two fundraisers each year. A corn sale that has been held for the past 35 years with Powers Farm Market donating the corn, and an ornament sale that takes place during the holiday season. The committee is working on a succession plan for new leadership for the committee. A complete copy of the subcommittee’s report will be sent to Council members and filed with these minutes.

Youth Ministry Subcommittee Report
Michael Moore, on behalf of Youth Ministry Subcommittee (Michael Moore, Carol McManus and Dawn Schnell), reported on the goals and expectations, current status, activities to enhance the program, and committee recommendations for the St. Louis Youth Ministry. Greg Farrell is part time Youth Minister with approximately 15-25 teens attending weekly meetings. The subcommittee recommended that parents or other interested adults be asked to serve the youth group in organizing field trips and other activities. The subcommittee agreed to continue as an ad hoc group to support Greg Farrell in coordinating upcoming events. A complete copy of the report is attached to these minutes.

Document on Pastoral Administrator
Brad Kammholz distributed a draft of a document that will serve as a communication to the parish about the activities of the Parish Council in researching a leadership model of Pastoral Administrator. Council members were asked to review it and make suggestions and/or changes to the document and it will be discussed at the June meeting.

Parish Council Picnic
The June 1st meeting of the Parish Council will begin at 6:30 p.m. beginning with a picnic. Sarah McDonald will email Council members about binging a dish to pass. Michael Moore agreed to cook hot dogs and burgers.

No other topics were presented for discussion. The meeting adjourned at 9 p.m. All joined in a closing prayer.
